This .3 CEU course is designed to offer introductory information about the syndrome of autism. It presents facts as to when autism was first identified in modern medicine, the definition of autism, the medical diagnosis as determined on the DSM IV, and past and current incidence rates.

In this course you will also discover what author Kathie Harrington, calls the "Ten Laws of Success for Children and Adults with Autism." You will learn specific strategies that support each of the Ten Laws. The speech/language pathologist's knowledge about the syndrome of autism will be multiplied as well as building confidence in working with this special population.

Kathie Harrington, M.A. C.C.C. SLP, received her master's degree in 1981 from Truman State University, Kirksville, MO. She provided speech therapy as a public school speech pathologist for 18 years and was a mentor teacher for the autistic population. Through her current private practice, Good Speech, in Las vegas, NV, Kathie provides individual therapy, consultative services to the First Step Program for infants ages 0-3 and their families, serves on several state committees for autism, and speaks nationally on autism and early speech-language development. Kathie and her husband Tim, have a 28 year-old son with autism and a daughter. Kathie's most recent publications in the area of autism are For Parents and Professionals: Autism: LinguiSystems, 1998 and For Parents and Professionals: Autism in Adolescents and Adults: LinguiSystems, 2000.
