This course was originally created as web course SPPA 336, Neuropathologies of Language and Cognition at California State University, Chico. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an undertanding of aphasia syndromes, closed head injury, and the effects of right hemisphere lesions. An overview of diagnostics and treatment ideas will be given.

At the successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the characteristics for aphasia syndromes, and right-hemisphere and executive function disorders

  • Identify prevention, diagnosis and remediation methods for language and cognitive disorders resulting from left hemisphere lesions

  • Identify prevention, diagnosis and remediation methods for language and cognitive disorders resulting from right hemisphere lesions

  • Identify the social aspects of aphasia, right hemisphere syndrome, and traumatic brain injury

  • Recognize prevention, assessment and remediation techniques for traumatic brain injury


Patrick McCaffrey, Ph.D went through national school in Killavullen, Ireland and secondary school in Mallow, and Tullow, Co Carlow, but did his university work in the USA. Patrick's bachelor's degree is from Curry College in Massachusetts (1969); his master's is from Montclair State in New Jersey (1971), and his doctorate is from Ohio University (1975). Patrick is Professor/Coordinator, Speech Pathology Graduate Program California State University, Chico.
